CONSULTANT - Mary Foley - LL.B

Invercargill

Areas of practice:

  • Relationship Property
  • Challenges to Wills
  • Employment
  • Trust Disputes

Mary is a specialist in relationship property matters and estate disputes (the latter being the subject of her doctoral thesis). She regularly represents clients in the Family and High Court in these areas. Most of the time, disputes can be resolved without the need for a hearing and that is always the goal. Mary is experienced in all forms of dispute resolution and is a big believer in mediation. She has trained as a mediator through AMINZ.

For the past two decades Mary has had several teaching and research roles at Otago University Law School which complement her private practice. She currently teaches in the first-year law programme and in Wills and Trusts.

Since 2000, Mary has also been a co-author of the leading employment law text “Personal Grievances”.

While her advice is always legally robust, Mary is focussed on the overall outcome for her clients and combines legal advice with pragmatism and an eye to what is cost effective.

Outside of Scholefield Law, Mary has held a number of governance roles. Currently, she is Deputy Chair of the James Hargest Board of Trustees and a trustee for the MYPLC Trust (Murihiku Teen Parents’ unit). In addition, Mary sits on the Southland Branch of the NZLS Standards Committee and is also a volunteer for the Red Cross Refugee resettlement programme.
